Recently, “Newsroom Live” of CCTV news reported on the issue of the retirement of Windows XP, saying that the MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic China) suggested Chinese users to use domestic computer operation system instead of foreign ones.

Recently, “Newsroom Live” of CCTV news reported on the issue of the retirement of Windows XP, saying that the MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic China) suggested Chinese users to use domestic computer operation system instead of foreign ones. According to Ni Guangnan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the operation system is the base of information system, thus, our autonomy of the system is vital to the nation’s information security. CCTV also reported on the pros and cons of home-produced Linux operation system, including Youqiling.

After April 8, 2014, Microsoft Company stopped providing service support to Windows XP. This has brought up generous attention and concern of society and users on the issue of information security. MIIT responded with a promise to support the R&D of home-made Linux operation system, and appealed to users to adopt domestic operation systems.

In February, Inspector reported on the “Waterloo” of Red Flag Linux. However, the R&D of home-made systems is not yet terminated. Currently, a lot of domestic companies are still working on it. Even worldwide, the commercialization of Linux is just unfolding.

Fang Binxing, “the Father of Firewall” in China, suggested that upgrading to Win7 or Win8 is even more dangerous than keeping using XP. He believes that the government should replace XP with domestic operation system that they nurtures.

MIIT: Hoping users would use domestic operation systems

Zhang Feng, an engineer from MIIT, said that users should be aware of the security loop hole of Windows XP after the service shut down and adopt proper security guarding methods. He hoped that private users download prevention software provided by relevant domestic corporations in order to reduce the danger. MIIT will also support the R&D of home-made Linux operation system.

Zhang Feng revealed that about 70% of computer users in China are currently using Windows XP, including a large number of local government officials. For them, there is even greater a hidden danger.

CCTV: Is the domestic system mature enough to replace Windows XP? The CCTV reporter did some homework on comparing XP with some mainstream home-made systems.

As for usability, the layout and operation mode of the two systems are the same.

As for velocity, the running speeds of two systems are about the same.

As for the abundance of applications, home-made systems have all the basics, including internet surfing, pictures, videos, music and so on.

However, software such as PS, QQ and some games cannot operate on home-made systems.

According to Hu Changjun, a researcher at MIIT, a reason for this is that companies are unwilling to develop these applications due to lack of profits.

As for the supporting hardware, some mobile phones and digital cameras can not connect with domestic operation systems.

A main reason for this, according to Qiao Yong, the vice president of Zhong Biao Software Company, is that Linux is too unprofitable to receive professional support from device suppliers.

As for the price, some domestic operation systems are free, while the retail price of Windows 8.1 differs from hundreds to thousands yuan. In this criterion, the home-made systems are competitive.

Domestic operation systems are vital to nation’s information security

Despite of all the flaws of domestic operation system, we should still support it. The reason is simple, it is vital to the nation’s information security.

Ni said that all the applications on computer operate with the support of operation system. When a computer is connected to the internet, whoever is in control of the operation system is also in control of all the operation information of that computer.

He added that sensitive information of users could be accessed by the system manufacturer easily, including your identity, your account, your contact list, and your phone number. The social and economic activities in our country would be easily accessible if the manufacturer uses big data analysis.

He also said the worry is not ill-founded. The materials released by Edward Snowden suggests that Microsoft has cooperated with the U.S. government in helping NSA access the encrypted data on internet.

In Russia and Germany, government computers are already installed with domestic operation systems to ensure information security.

Ni proposed that the measures taken to support domestic systems should be centralized. The nation should further support it in government procurement. The government should also provide immunity to those industries who are afraid of taking responsibility for the mistakes that could have been made by adopting the domestic system. At the same time, the current embarrassing situation of home-made systems will hopefully be changed by the newly established “Chinese intelligent terminal operating system industry alliance”, which is originated by China Electronics Coporation(CEC), China Electronics Technology Group Corporation(CETC), and China Software Industry Association(CSIA).

Wu Hequan, an academician of CAE, said that the decision of Microsoft on XP provided a great opportunity for the development of domestic operation system. “Do not think that Apple and Google are too big to fail. The only thing that is internal is innovation. As long as we keep innovating, there will always be chances.”
